One of the most widely used of the stainless steels. It was original name was 18-8 which stood for its chromium and nickel content. It possesses a great combination of strength, corrosion resistance and fabrication ability. It is available in the widest variety of forms and sizes of any stainless steel. 304L is a low carbon version of type 304 stainless. 304L is used almost interchangeably with 304 but is preferred for welding operations. It offers a good combination of strength, corrosion resistance and fabricability. Most industries use this material in some way. This alloy has been used for everything from ball point pen barrels to flatware to fasteners.
